Enabling change in our Society, Environment and Economy (SEE)

Curtain Retrofit Pilot Project

SEE-Change, in collaboration with the Environment and Planning Directorate, St Vincent de Paul Society, Communities@Work, YWCA, Belconnen Community Services, Northside Community Services and Canberra Loves 40%, undertook a pilot project to provide block-out curtains free-of-charge to low income households living in disadvantage using a community-based delivery model.

In this first stage, curtains were made to fit windows measured by Energy Efficiency Outreach Officers, and installed with the help of volunteers in homes that already have pelmets. In the next phase we will consider testing the construction and installation of pelmets along with curtains.

This project provides a great opportunity to demonstrate the SEE in SEE-Change (social, environmental and economic sustainability), by:

  • bringing people together to support the vulnerable in our community;
  • improving the energy performance and living conditions of vulnerable people’s houses; and
  • using existing materials and volunteer support to keep costs to a minimum.

Below are some images from the first workshop and installation.

This project has been kindly supported by funding from the ACT Government and CBB – The Not 4 Profit People.
