Inner North
Who we are
Inner North SEE-Change aims to raise awareness and encourage the community of the Inner North to reduce our ecological footprint. We do this by sharing ideas, information and resources.
In addition to our face-to-face meetings we have a Google discussion group for sharing information and documents.
How you can be involved
Inner north SEE-Change is open to anyone with an interest in getting to know their community better and at the same time reducing their carbon footprint. You may choose to become a formal SEE-Change member or not - it's up to you. Your level of involvement can be as much or as little as you are able to commit. For example you could:
-
Attend monthly meetings and hear guest speakers
-
Join a specific project team (or start a new team that meets your own interests)
-
Become a committee member
-
Share information and ideas over our Google group.

SEE-Change conducted a survey among its inner north members. The results provided a snap shot of our membership; how they heard about us, what their interests are, and where they would like to be putting their energy. Have a look and see how your SEE-Change experience differs (or is similar to) other inner north SEE-Change members.
You can view the results of the survey here. Further data will be added and survey results updated as new members join the group.

Inner-North 'over the back fence' tour: Making a weatherboard house more energy and water efficient
SEE-Change Inner-North went on a visit to a 1962 weatherboard house in O'Connor before it received a serious makeover. Resisting advice to demolish and build a 'real' sustainable house, the owner used this opportunity to gather ideas to dramatically improve the existing house, without losing too much of its '60s character. Click here for some photos.
Transport Series 2011
SEE-Change Inner-North organised a transport series over the months of February and March 2011. In total, around 130 people attended and got an insight into car-free living, electric bicycles, alternative fuel types and electric vehicles. Click here for some photos.
Food, Inc - film and supper night
SEE-Change Inner-North organised a brilliant film and supper night on 9 December 2010 - Food, Inc. Approximately 70 people came along to watch the film, Food, Inc, and to enjoy an impressive spread of local food. Click here for some photos.
Retrofitting and Everything Solar!
Matthew Driver of Lyneham has extensively retrofitted his 1950's Lyneham house, dramatically reducing electricity, gas and water use and cutting the households carbon emissions on energy use from 19 Tonne a year to minus one Tonne.
The cost of flying & carbon offsets:
Guest speakers talked us through the real cost of our national and international flights, such a large part of many of our lifestyles. There will also be advice on the carbon offset options, not only for our flying kilometres but all aspects of our carbon footprint.
Q&A with a Carbon Cop: Canberra based scientist, Lish Fejer, who may be better known as a Carbon Cop on the ABC series, will offer advice on how we can all make the necessary changes to reduce domestic carbon emissions. In the series Lish led typical Australian families through a step by step process on how their current use of energy is creating an uncertain future, and how a few simple changes to their lifestyles can make a huge difference. Now is your chance to ask Lish questions about how you can make significant changes.
Please email your questions in advance to AskACarbonCop@see-change.org.au.
Creating Urban Wetlands in Canberra's Inner North: Edwina Richardson from the Department of the Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water will discuss a range of wetland initiatives for Canberra’s Inner North, including Banksia St, O’Connor wetlands, Flemington Ponds, Mitchell, and Lyneham and Dickson Wetlands.
Edwina is currently project managing the redesign & construction of the Banksia St, O'Connor wetlands which will serve to improve water quality in the Sullivan's Creek catchment, increase urban biodiversity and provide an urban oasis. She is eager to consult with and engage the local community.
Winter-wising your Windows: Windows can be a major source of heat loss on cold Canberra nights. Single glazed windows can be up to 10 times worse at insulating, when compared to the same area of standard wall material.
So what are the options when it comes to Window Insulation? Whether you are a renter or a homeowner, come learn about the best ways to keep the heat in and what it will cost. Peter Miller from the Home Energy Advice Team will lead a discussion on curtains, pelmets, and all the various ways of double-glazing.
Talk Trash: A public talk on waste reduction and recycling at home. So you might not think it’s the most interesting topic.... but did you know that waste-wising your home is one of the easiest, most inexpensive ways you can make a big difference to reducing green house gas emissions, conserving our natural resources and save some money at the same time … and that’s exciting!
We learnt from the experts, Iome Christa, ACTNow Waste Project Officer, and Simone Annis, Waste Management Guru.
• Why organic waste should NOT go to land fill … what are the alternatives?
• What exactly can and can’t be recycled in the ACT?
• What other recycling options are available?
• What is the best way of disposing of those old light bulbs, batteries, old chemicals, empty insect spray etc?
Whether you’re a waste-wise warrior or a waste-wise wannabe, come join in the discussion … guarantee it won’t be a waste of your time!
A booklet was produced for this talk and is available here.
