Designing Energy Efficient Homes
The Belconnen SEE-Change group is hosting the presentation.
Firstly, there will be a short talk by Jodie Pipkorn and Paul Nagle who are developing education materials for SEE-Change on buying a new home and making sure it is sustainable. They will also give short briefing on a demonstration home they are building as part of the Ginninderry development in West Belconnen. This home will include:
- 8 Star rating under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS);
- Energy efficient appliances;
- Renewable energy system;
- A hydronic heater run from the heat pump hot water system;
- Efficient water use features and much more;
- Guided tours and showcase educational displays on how the various systems work.
Jodie and Paul will provide information about these projects and then discuss collaboration opportunities the Belconnen Group may like to get involved with. Jodie is an architect and SEE-Change Committee member, and Paul is a sustainability consultant and a SEE-Change member.
The main talk will be given by Ben Elliston. Do you want a home that offers comfort all year round without huge energy bills? That is efficient, comfortable, healthy and ventilated? Ben will explain the principles of Passive House design. It really works and houses are being built to this standard now. In his talk, Ben will bust some common myths that people have in regards to building design.
Ben is a Certified Passive House Designer. He is also a member of the Belconnen SEE-Change group, a member of the board of the International Solar Energy Society, a long time member of the Alternative Technology Association, and of the International Solar Energy Society.
