Affordable Housing Talk
Innovative Models for Affordable Housing
On Sunday 30 August 2015, the Belconnen local group organised a talk on Innovative Models for Affordable Housing.
Over 60 people attended this event and enjoyed some lovely home-cooked soup.
The talks consisted of:
Vauban & Rieselfeld – A case study in Sustainable Districts: Leigh Duxson
This presentation outlined the social history of Freiburg Germany since the 70’s and in this context the development of two districts which have become significant examples of sustainable urban development. Comparisons were made between these districts and where possible with Australian major city examples. Also shown was an example of a passivhaus visited in Vauban. Smart Urban Villages – Ben O’Callaghan
Smart Urban Villages’ is a pioneering new model for sustainable living. By combining extensive community facilities, professional management and truly sustainable design, the model is set to change the way Australian’s perceive housing. Residents will be able to avoid mortgages through the long-term leasing model which allows residents to stay for as long as they like, just like the successful European housing model. Sun Villages – Stina Kerans and Greg Henderson
Sun Villages is a local housing development in an apartment block on the Canberra/Queanbeyan border for 35-50 people that demonstrates:
- housing that responds to your changing needs – apartment size can expand and contract based on resident needs;
- your money stays in your hands – an innovative share structure for owners and investors to reduce debt and bank involvement;
- architectural design fundamentally effects well-being; and
- people who have access to community are healthier and happier.
